It is always exciting for students to find out who their teacher will be and to discover who else is in their class. Along with that excitement, it is natural for there to be some nerves as well. As you receive your child’s classroom assignment this week, I want to share a few points that may help ease any concerns.
Class placement is a thoughtful process, and our staff takes it very seriously. Over the past year, teachers and staff at Olive have watched your child grow. We have seen how they interact with peers and adults, and we have gathered both academic and social emotional information. All of this is used to create balanced classrooms where each child can thrive.
Our goal is to place students in environments that support growth and success. We consider a variety of factors including peer dynamics, ability levels, and independence. At times, combination classes are necessary, and in these situations, our teachers work closely together to ensure students are learning their grade level standards.
Because of the complexity of this process, classroom changes cannot be accommodated. Even one move often creates a ripple effect that impacts many others. While a placement may not always match what a child or parent had hoped for, I encourage us all to model positivity and flexibility. Children notice how we respond, and if we show excitement for the year ahead, they are more likely to feel the same.
I cannot wait to welcome all our Olive students and connect with you on Thursday. We are going to have a wonderful year together!

The new school year is about to start and that means confirming or updating your student’s information in Aeries, our student information system, and completing our Back to School Forms.
NUSD uses Aeries to allow families to use the same platform that is already being used to access your student’s information in Aeries.
Completing the Back to School Forms is required for each student in your family. We need your help to ensure that every student and emergency contact information is as accurate and current as possible.
A couple of reminders:
To access the forms, log in directly to your Aeries Parent Portal here:
Log into your Aeries Parent Portal
OR
For instructions on how to access the Annual Back to School Forms on Aeries, please visit this webpage for instructions:
Annual Back to School Update
OR
If you’re a new parent to NUSD, the district will be generating Aeries Portal accounts automatically for parents who do not have an Aeries account using the email address in our Student Information System (Aeries).
If you do not receive an email or have access to the parent portal, or any other questions, please contact Brooke Dhuey, Olive Office Manager @ 415-897-2131 or bdhuey@nusd.org.

Olive Elementary is a device-free campus unless the device is school-issued, such as a Chromebook. Cell phones, smart watches, AirPods, and other personal electronic devices are not to be used during the school day.
All off-limit devices must be turned off and stored in backpacks from 8:30 a.m. until dismissal. Smart watches may not be worn during school hours. Devices may not be used during recess, lunch, or bathroom breaks. Students may not take photos, videos, or recordings at school without permission.
If a student needs to contact a parent, they must use the office phone. Parents should call the office if they need to send a message to their child. Devices that are seen or heard during the day will be sent to the office and returned at dismissal. Olive Elementary is not responsible for lost or damaged personal devices.

At Olive Elementary, we are committed to creating a safe, welcoming environment for every student. Last year, we saw an increase in unsafe language, and we want to be clear: it will not be tolerated.
Unsafe language includes unkind speech such as name-calling or profanity. Hate speech, any language that discriminates against someone based on race, skin color, religion, sexual orientation, ability, or gender/gender identity is especially serious.
While both are harmful, hate speech carries different consequences under NUSD policy, depending on the situation. Please talk with your child about using respectful language at all times so our school remains a place where everyone feels safe and valued.
For more information, please refer to the Olive Family Handbook for NUSD’s Hate Speech Policy.

When parents arrive on campus during their All in One time frame, they must first visit the library to confirm they have completed the Aeries confirmation before visiting the MPR to receive additional school information. There will be Chromebooks available in the library for parents to complete their Aeries confirmation.

A reminder that the first day of school starts on August 21st at 8:40 am for all students. TK/K dismissal is at 1:40 PM, 3:05 PM for 1st-3rd, and 3:10 PM for 4th-5th. Morning supervision begins at 8:20 am, so for your child’s safety, we ask parents not to drop them off any earlier. Parents are welcome to kiss-and-go from our car loading zone (red curb) out front or you can park on Olive or Plum and walk up to campus. For car drop-off, please do not get out of your vehicle.
Plum Street parking lot: This lot is for staff parking, buses and our Special Education families only. Vehicles that are double parked may receive tickets from the police department. If you need to bring or pick up your child, please plan to park on Plum Street. Any curbs painted white are for loading and unloading only. Parked vehicles in both red and white zones may receive a ticket as well.
Peach Street entrance: Peach Street is an access only cul-de-sac. Students MAY NOT be picked up or dropped off in this area. Parents may park on Chase Street and walk their children down Peach Street, but they cannot drive down Peach Street. Please use Olive Avenue or Plum Street designated areas for drop off and pick up.
Olive Avenue parking lot: This lot is reserved for staff; however, there are a few spaces for parents to park during the day. When dropping off or picking students up, please park on Olive or use the car loop.
Olive Avenue Crosswalk: If you use the Olive crosswalk, please follow the direction of our crossing guard.
Thank you in advance for helping us keep our drop-off safe, organized, and running smoothly.
